What a personal account can do, plus an optional business profile

A personal account lets you send or request personal payments, transfer money for purchases of goods and services, buy through an authorized merchant's mobile website, app or Venmo business profile, and donate to charity profiles. PayPal may also offer a business profile inside your personal account for receiving payments for goods and services, but that feature is at its sole discretion and may not be available to everyone.

Send or request personal payments.
Transfer money for purchases of goods and services.
Buy things through an authorized merchant’s mobile website, app, or Venmo business profile.
Send donations to charity profiles.
We may also offer you the ability to set up a business profile within your personal account, which you can use to receive payments for the sale of goods and services.

Account & Service Control · Restriction or exception

Personal and Teen Accounts cannot be used for business sales to people you don't know

Personal accounts and Teen Accounts may not be used for business, commercial or merchant transactions with other personal or Teen Accounts, including paying or accepting payment for goods or services from users you do not personally know (examples given: concert tickets, electronics, sneakers, a watch, apartment deposits, dog walking). The exceptions are commercial transactions Venmo expressly authorizes, such as transactions with authorized merchants or business profiles, purchases with your Venmo Mastercard, and payments identified as for goods and services. If you want to receive payments for goods or services, you must have the buyer mark the payment as for goods and services or have a business profile. Elsewhere the agreement adds that regularly recurring goods-and-services payments cannot be sent through Pay and Request, and Teen Accounts cannot request or receive goods-and-services payments.

Supporting quotations

Except for commercial transactions expressly authorized by Venmo, for example, transactions with authorized merchants or business profiles, purchases made using your Venmo Mastercard®, or transactions that are identified as payments for goods and services, personal accounts and Teen Accounts may not be used to conduct business, commercial or merchant transactions with other personal accounts or Teen Accounts
which includes paying or accepting payment from other personal accounts or Teen Accounts held by users you do not personally know for goods or services
If you plan to use your Venmo account to receive payments for goods or services, you must ask your buyer to identify that their payment is for goods and services or have a business profile.
You may not send regularly recurring payments for goods and services using the Pay and Request feature in your Venmo account (for example, every month or otherwise on a routine billing cycle).

Qualifications & exceptions

  • Allowed exceptions: authorized merchants, business profiles, Venmo Mastercard purchases, and payments identified as for goods and services.
  • Teen Accounts can pay for goods or services but cannot request or receive goods-and-services payments.

You are responsible for everything a Teen User does, and Teen Account funds are yours

PayPal may offer a Teen Account: a sub-account linked to your personal account for someone you authorize who is 13 to 17 when the Teen Account is opened. You fund it from your personal account. Any activity by the Teen User in the Teen Account or the Venmo services is treated as your activity, and you are responsible for all of it. Funds held in a Teen Account count as funds in your Venmo account, and you agree they are owned by you.
